Windows XP reaches its end of support

Created: Saturday, 29 March 2014 Written by Ehab Eldeeb

Windows XP is one of the most popular and most used operating system nowadays.
Even Cash Machines use Windows XP!
But it's said that most cash machines will be switching their systems to Linux-based systems.

If you are one of the many people in the world who still prefer windows XP .. I have bad news for you!
Microsoft has decided to stop supporting this popular operating system..

What does "Stopping Support" mean?

It means that you will no longer get windows updates .. which will make your system more vulnerable to malware.
Even if you have a strong Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware applications, you will still need security patches on the windows core.
And, as it is always said .. protection is always better than curing..

Why is Microsoft stopping support for Windows XP?

Microsoft's strategy is to have only 5 years of support for each new windows they release, And another 5 years of "extended" support.
That makes 10 years for each windows life.
Windows XP was released in April 2004 .. So its extended support ends on April 2014 (which is sadly now)..
Windows 7 extended support should end by 2020 (We still have some time to use windows 7).

What should you do now?

You can choose between one of the following three choices:

  1. Switch to another distribution of Windows (Vista / 7 / 8.1 / 9)
  2. Linux Ubuntu (Link: Click here)
  3. Any other Free Linux-based operating system. (Check this article on Wikipedia)

I do not personally recommend windows 8 or 8.1
[Windows 8 can be upgraded to 8.1 for free anyway..]
If you would like to continue using a windows operating system, I recommend switching to Windows 7 SP1.

If you have more than 4 GB of RAM, get any of the 64-bits (x64) versions.
If you have less than 4 GB of RAM, get any of the 32-bits (x86) versions.

Sadly...
We will face the very same problem in 2019 regarding windows 7 .. But I hope windows 9 could replace it :)
